4 Helpful Ways to Walk Through Grief During Easter

As we approach Easter, the sight of pastel colored eggs and invitations to Sunday services may bring up feelings of grief and heartbreak for many. Whether you're mourning the loss of a loved one, a relationship, or a painful past, know that your grief is valid. But remember, it doesn't have to define this season forever. Healing is possible.

It’s important to acknowledge that for some, the spring can be a difficult time filled with reminders of loss and loneliness. If you're feeling this way, it's okay to give yourself permission to grieve and feel whatever emotions come up. Remember that it's normal to have mixed feelings during this time and there is no right or wrong way to feel.

Having said that, there are a few useful emotional tools to help you walk through this difficult season:

Honesty is a key to emotional well-being. Don't keep your feelings bottled up inside. It's important to share how you're feeling, no matter how small or big. Remember, a simple acknowledgment can make a world of difference. Like "Right now I feel sad that my sister won't be with us for Easter."

It's easy to reach for comfort food or a drink when we're feeling down, but it's important to remember that it only masks our emotions temporarily. Addressing the root of our sadness is key to true healing. So next time you're tempted to overeat or overdrink, try sitting with your feelings instead. Your heart will thank you in the long run.

During times of emotional pain, remember that you're not alone. Even if you don't feel like celebrating, having a plan and someone to lean on can make all the difference. Isolating yourself may only intensify your feelings of loneliness. Reach out, connect with others, even if it’s just to say something such as, “I am sad right now and don’t want to talk, but wanted to check in.”

Do you have a special dish that reminds you of a loved one? Or perhaps an Easter tradition that no longer holds meaning for you? This is the perfect time to decide what traditions you want to continue and which ones you want to change. Celebrate in a way that is meaningful to you this year. Share your favorite memories with family and friends, and create new traditions that bring joy and warmth into your life.
